Cook County Circuit Judge Tracy Porter sided with Illinois voters, who argued that the former president should be barred from voting in the state’s March 19 primary and November 5 general election for violating the anti-insurrection clause of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Free Speech for the People, the advocacy group that led the Illinois disqualification effort, praised the ruling as a “historic victory” in a statement. “This is an unconstitutional decision, which we will immediately appeal,” a campaign spokesperson for Trump, the national frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination, said in a statement. Colorado and Maine previously removed Trump from their state’s ballot after disqualifying him under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution.
