Washington: The US President’s office, the White House, has denied allegations of US interference in the internal affairs of Bangladesh. Violence in Bangladesh forced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and leave the country.
White House Press Secretary Karin Jean Pierre said in her daily press conference on Monday, “We have no involvement in this (political instability in Bangladesh). Any news or rumor about the US administration’s involvement in these incidents is completely false. This is not true.”
Jean Pierre was reacting to media reports quoting Hasina’s alleged claim that if she (Hasina) had given up sovereignty over the island of St. Martin and allowed the US to establish dominance over the Bay of Bengal, she would have remained in power. Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed has denied that his mother has made any such statement. Wazed said in a post on the social media platform ‘X’, “The statement of my mother regarding resignation published in a newspaper recently is completely false and fabricated.
He has confirmed to me in a conversation that he did not make any statement before or after leaving Dhaka. The White House said that it is the right and privilege of the people of Bangladesh to decide their future. Jean Pierre said, “This (choosing their leader) is an important decision of the Bangladeshi people, taken by them. We believe that the people of Bangladesh should decide the future of their government. On any kind of allegations, we will continue to say that there is absolutely no truth in them.
The White House has said that the US will continue to monitor the situation in Bangladesh. It also stressed that President Joe Biden will continue to speak “clearly and frankly” on human rights issues. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said this in response to questions asked about the appeal of Hindu-American groups and Indian-American lawmakers in which they demanded the US government to intervene to ensure the safety of the lives and properties of the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister.
