The video sharing app TikTok has been banned in the US since January 19. On Friday, most judges in the US Supreme Court were in favor of upholding the federal law that would ban TikTok after January 19.
TikTok vs Garland is a legal case that seeks to prevent the social media platform from being able to send messages to the US government.
The court pits the three branches against each other. They are of the same opinion that the app poses a serious threat to national security.
What did the lawyers say during the hearing?
During the hearing, Chief Justice John Roberts said, “Should we ignore the fact that TikTok’s parent company is doing some intelligence work? Justice Brett Kavanagh said that the concerns of foreign data collection on Americans were very high. Justice Amy Coney Barrett said, the law does not ask to ban TikTok. The law is asking ByteDance to back down. If that had happened, we would not be here.”
Francisco, the creator of Stark Picture, said, “We are not disputing the risks. We are disputing the measures taken by the government to stop it.” Jeffrey Fisher, the lawyer representing TikTok, said that this law was against history, culture and the right to work.
TikTok was banned in the US in 2023
America’s newly elected President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order to ban TikTok. However, he later said that he wanted to save it. The judges discussed the possibility of giving the Trump administration some time to think about it. Let us tell you that India, Canada, Australia and Taiwan have already banned TikTok. The Biden administration banned TikTok in early 2023.
