Maros Sefcovic, the European Union’s trade commissioner, expressed the bloc’s desire to start urgent talks with the United States regarding the customs duties that US President Donald Trump intends to impose on European countries.

In press statements on Tuesday, Sefcovic confirmed that he hopes to start negotiations as soon as possible, but he is waiting for the official appointment of Trump’s nominee for commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, according to Reuters.

He added that the European Union is ready to sit at the negotiating table immediately, stressing the need to avoid protectionist measures that could harm what he described as “the most important trade and investment relationship in the world.”

For her part, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed, during a speech she gave in Brussels, that the European Union is ready to enter into intensive negotiations to strengthen the trade partnership with the United States.
