After Israel took control of the southern city of Rafah in Gaza, humanitarian aid coming from the Rafah crossing has stopped. After which aid was being delivered to Gaza via the sea route. Now the US Army has closed this sea route as well. The Pentagon informed on Tuesday that the temporary port has been damaged due to bad weather, and it has been closed.
The port was built by the US military to deliver aid to Gaza. It cost $320 million to build, but it is reported to have been damaged by bad weather in less than two weeks of operation. Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said in a media briefing that it would take more than a week for the port to be operational again.
Repairs will be done from Israel’s port
Sabrina Singh said that to repair the port, the stump of the port will be taken back to Ashdod port in Israel so that the damage caused by the weather can be repaired by the US Central Command.
Situation worsened due to Rafa control
The Israeli army invaded Rafah on May 6 and took full control of the Rafah crossing. During the 8-month-long war, most of the aid has reached Gaza through this crossing. According to human rights organizations and the UN, Israel’s attacks in Gaza have created a humanitarian crisis in the region, where most of the population is at risk of starvation.
The war has been going on since October
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 36 thousand people have been killed in the war that has been going on for 8 months. Israel says that it has killed about 15 thousand Hamas fighters in this war, but even after so many days of the war, it has not been successful in getting the hostages released and the war is going on.
