US President Donald Trump’s tariff war has given sleepless nights to many countries around the world. After taking charge of America, he had made it clear that he would impose tariffs on many countries. Through his tariff war, Trump first targeted China. But now he has taken a U-turn in this matter.
Trump was kind to China
In fact, US President Donald Trump indicated on Wednesday that he may consider reducing the tariffs imposed on China for the sale of short video app TikTok to Chinese company ByteDance. ByteDance has been given a deadline of April 5 to find a non-Chinese buyer; otherwise, TikTok may be banned in the US due to national security concerns. Trump has previously described tariffs as important for the US on several occasions. He believes that these tariffs will not only have a positive impact on the US economy but will also reduce the country’s debt. He had made it clear after becoming president that his strategy is to Make America Great Again.
Discount in tariff in exchange for TikTok
Trump said he was willing to extend the deadline if no agreement was reached by that deadline. “With respect to TikTok, China has to play a role in that, possibly in the form of sanctions, and I think they will. Maybe I’ll give them a little tariff cut to get that done,” he told reporters.
The Trump administration has previously used tariffs as a negotiating tool in talks over TikTok’s ownership. In January, Trump warned that he could impose tariffs on China if Beijing did not approve a US deal with TikTok.
Vice President JD Vance expects the general terms of an agreement on ownership of the social media platform to be finalized by April 5. The future of TikTok, which is used by about 170 million Americans, depends on this sale.
