Intercontinental nuclear missile
An unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) was launched from Space Force Base Vandenberg in California.
During its journey, the nuclear missile traveled more than 4,000 miles at a speed of more than 15,000 miles per hour, and its destination was towards the Marshall Islands in the central Pacific Ocean.
The missile is capable of reaching any target around the world within just 30 minutes after launch, Air Force Technology reports.
When will the ICBM be disposed of?
The ICBM is a vital component of the US military’s nuclear forces, capable of delivering a nuclear payload to targets around the world, but is scheduled to be phased out by 2029 and replaced by the LGM-35A Sentinel ICBM.
“The Sentinel weapon system is the most cost-effective option for maintaining a secure land base,” the US Air Force said.
Vandenberg Air Force Base is home to the 576th Flight Test Squadron, the only dedicated ICMB test squadron in the United States.
Officials said the launch was nothing more than a weapon test, and that such tests are not related to world news, but are routine launches to ensure capabilities are up to standard.
