Serbia’s star player Novak Djokovic will not participate in the upcoming US Open tennis tournament as he has not been allowed to travel to the US due to non-availability of the Kovid vaccine. Djokovic announced his withdrawal from the last Grand Slam of the year on Twitter on Thursday, shortly before the US Open draw was released. US Open at Flushing Meadows to begin on Monday

Djokovic wrote, “Sad that I won’t be able to travel to New York this time for the US Open. I will stay positive and look forward to participating in the next competition.”

- Djokovic, 35, from Serbia has won 21 Grand Slam events, including three US Open titles. He won titles in New York in 2011, 2015 and 2018.
- Djokovic has also been the runner-up six times in the US Open. Last year, his dream of winning all four Grand Slams in one year was shattered by Daniil Medvedev in the final.
- Foreign nationals who have not been vaccinated against Kovid-19 are not allowed to enter the US or Canada, and Djokovic said that even if he is barred from playing in some tournaments, he will still not get vaccinated.
- Due to lack of vaccination, Djokovic was not able to participate in the Australian Open earlier this year. Apart from this, he had to miss many important tournaments in North America.
- He participated in the French Open where he lost to Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals. After this he participated in Wimbledon and won the title.
