China’s Chandrayaan ‘Chang E-5’ has successfully returned to Earth after taking samples from the lunar surface. Samples have been brought to Earth more than 40 years after the moon. According to the China National Space Administration (CNSA), ‘Chang E-5’ landed in the Sijiwang banner of Mongolia Autonomous Region at one o’clock in the wee hours of local time (on Wednesday). CNSA chief Zhang Keijn has declared the ‘Chang E-5’ campaign successful.

With this, China’s current three-step lunar exploration program to orbit, land there and retrieve samples successfully ended in 2004, according to China’s government news agency Xinhua. Two of the four modules of ‘Chang E-5’ reached the lunar surface on December 1, and they excavated and collected nearly two kilograms of samples.

These samples were placed in sealed containers and transferred to the return module. ‘Chang E-5’ is the third Chinese vehicle to reach the lunar surface. This is a recent campaign to link China’s ambitious space program.

The Chang E4, sent under the expedition, was the first vehicle to reach the far side of the moon. Earlier, scientists had received samples from the moon through Luna 24 spacecraft containing robots sent by the former Soviet Union.
