Donald Trump and New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani are scheduled to meet at the White House on November 21. Trump has previously criticized Mamdani’s policies, but agreed to meet when the offer came.
New York/Washington: US President Donald Trump has said that New York City’s newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani will meet with him at the White House on Friday. Trump had previously strongly criticized Mamdani’s policies. A day before the November 4 election, Trump had warned that if Mamdani won, it would prove to be an “economic and social disaster” for New York City. On Wednesday, Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, “New York City’s Communist Mayor Zohran ‘Kwame’ Mamdani has requested a meeting. We have agreed that this meeting will take place on Friday, November 21, in the Oval Office. Further details will be provided soon.”
After the victory, Mamdani targeted Trump.
In his fiery victory speech, Mamdani directly challenged Trump. Trump is cracking down on illegal immigrants in his second term, while Mamdani said that immigrants give New York City its strength and that the city will now be “led by an immigrant.” Mamdani said, “Ultimately, if anyone can show the country betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it’s New York, which brought him to the top. If there’s any way to deter a dictator, it’s to dismantle the very conditions that helped him rise to power. That’s the only way to stop Trump and the next Trump. So, Donald Trump, I know you’re watching. I’ll say four words: Turn up the volume!”
“I really love New York.”
Trump described Mamdani’s speech as “very angry” and said that if he didn’t show respect for Washington, he had no chance of success. When asked if he would contact Mamdani, Trump said, “He should contact us. I think he should come forward. I’m here. We’ll see what happens. But I think it would be more appropriate for him to contact us. I’m on the fence because I want the new mayor to do well, because I love New York. I really love New York.” Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and said that communism has never succeeded for thousands of years. He said, “Communism, or the idea of communism, has never worked. I doubt it will work this time.”
Mamdani created history by winning the election
Zohran Mamdani made history by winning the highly-publicized New York mayoral election. He became the first South Asian and first Muslim mayor of America’s largest city. Mamdani, of Indian origin, is the son of renowned filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani. He was born in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. He moved to New York with his family at the age of 7 and became an American citizen in 2018. (PTI)
