Washington: The Donald Trump administration has announced that it will pay $1,000 and their travel expenses to illegal immigrants who voluntarily leave the US. This is so that mass deportation can be promoted.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) gave this information through a statement. It said, ‘DHS has announced a historic opportunity for illegal aliens to receive financial and travel assistance to travel back to their country through the CBP (Customs and Border Protection) Home app. Any illegal alien who uses the CBP Home app for self-deportation will also receive a stipend of $1,000, which will be paid after their return to the country is confirmed (through the app).’
Despite the cost of the ‘stipend’, it is estimated that self-deportation using the app will reduce the cost of deportation by about 70 per cent, Xinhua news agency quoted the department as saying. Currently, the average cost of arresting, detaining and removing an illegal alien is $17,121. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said, ‘If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest.’
‘100 most successful days’
While speaking at a recent rally in Michigan, US President Donald Trump claimed that the first 100 days of his term were the most successful days of any US administration in history. Trump cited policies such as increased deportations of illegal immigrants as among his major achievements. According to a recent analysis published by the Brookings Institution, “One area where the administration appears to be failing to meet its enforcement goals is the number of deportations.”
Trump’s steps are not being liked
“The number of deportations remains modest, but its chilling effects are potentially severe,” the analysis said. Meanwhile, many experts expressed concern about the implications of the administration’s immigration policies. “Americans are concerned about immigrants crossing the border illegally, so it has been a good issue politically. But surveys show that people don’t like his approach and feel he is deporting people without due process,” Darrell West, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, told Xinhua.
