Washington. US President-elect Donald Trump has suffered a major setback as Matt Gaetz said on Thursday that he is withdrawing his nomination for the post of US Attorney General. The sexual allegations against Matt Gaetz had stirred up a lot of controversy.
Gaetz said in a statement posted on his ‘X’ account, “I had great meetings with senators on November 20. I appreciate their feedback and the incredible support of so many people.”
The former Republican congressman from Florida further said, “Although the support was strong, it is clear that my confirmation for Attorney General was inappropriately unsuitable for Trump’s important job.” He said, “There is no point in wasting time in unnecessary tussle in Washington, so I am withdrawing my nomination for the position of Attorney General.
Gaetz’s selection had brought back to the forefront old allegations of sexual misconduct and other inappropriate conduct that were investigated by the Justice Department and the House Ethics Committee. CNN’s Paula Reed reported that Gaetz’s decision to withdraw his name came after the channel contacted her. The report said that a woman had told the ethics panel that she had had sexual relations with Gaetz twice in 2017 when she was 17 years old.
