Washington: Tariff has been the biggest strength of US President Donald Trump. On one hand, Donald Trump claims that he wants to take the country’s economy to the ‘factory first’ model, on the other hand, there is a fierce battle going on in the courts regarding his tariff policy.
On Wednesday night, the Court of International Trade (CIT) declared Trump’s decision to impose tariffs unconstitutional, but just 24 hours later, the appeals court stayed this order. Now the situation is that Trump can again impose tariffs using emergency powers, but this fight is not over yet. This legal battle can get even hotter with the next hearing and the possible intervention of the Supreme Court.
What is the whole matter?
On Wednesday, the Court of International Trade clearly stated that Trump’s decision to impose tariffs is not valid under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). After this decision, there was a stir in the White House and within a few hours the Trump administration challenged this decision.
Trump’s attack and warning
Trump posted a long post on his social media site Truth Social, calling the decision a ‘decision against America’ and demanded intervention from the Supreme Court. He raised the question, ‘Do these judges just hate Trump?’
The White House’s stance
Press secretary Caroline Levitt also targeted the three judges of the court by calling them ‘activists’ and said that this is an abuse of judicial power. She claimed that this is a conspiracy to ‘weaken’ Trump’s presidential powers.
Response from affected companies
The companies that sued the tariffs called the appeals court’s stay “just a process” and expressed confidence that the court would ultimately rule in their favor.
