Washington: Indian-American MP Ro Khanna has been named the Democratic Vice President of the Congressional India Caucus. The term was created in 1994. He is a Democratic Party MP from Silicon Valley. The 44-year-old Khanna was recently elected for the third time. He is considered a strong contender for the California Senate seat. The seat will be vacant after Kamla Harris takes over as Vice President. She will take up the post in January.

Democratic co-chair and MP Brad Sherman said in an email to his fellow MPs that he believed Ro Khanna would do a great job as Democratic vice president. Born in Philadelphia in 1976, Khanna is the youngest of four Indian-American lawmakers in the US House of Representatives. Dr. Ami Berra, 55, is the senior-most member of the ‘Samosa Caucus’. Apart from this, 47-year-old Raja Krishnamurthy and 55-year-old Pramila Jaipal are the other two members.

Khanna’s father is a chemical engineer, who graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and the University of Michigan, and his mother has been a school teacher. Khanna is considered a strong supporter of Indo-US relations. Earlier, he was Deputy Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Commerce during the tenure of former President Barack Obama. He held this post from August 2009 to August 2011.

Ro Khanna was elected to the US Congress for the first time in 2016, defeating Mike Honda. He made his mark not only within the Democratic Party, but at the national level on key issues related to foreign policy, national security, environment, commerce and manufacturing jobs. After serving as its vice president in the 117th Congress (2021–2022), he could become the Democratic co-chair of the caucus for the 118th Congress (2023–24). Congressman Steve Chabot will be the Republican co-chairman of the India Caucus at the next Congress.
