Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is also in the US.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met his US counterpart Marco Rubio in New York on Monday. The bilateral meeting between the two leaders took place on the eve of the high-level 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

America imposed 50 percent tariff on India

The meeting is the first face-to-face conversation between the two leaders after President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on India’s purchase of Russian oil, taking the total duty imposed on India to 50 percent.

Both the leaders met in Quad

The two leaders last met in July for the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting in Washington, D.C. Jaishankar’s meeting with Rubio comes on the same day India and the US are expected to discuss a trade deal with the government to be concluded as soon as possible.

Piyush Goyal will also meet the US side

A delegation led by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will meet with the US side. “The delegation plans to advance discussions with the aim of an early conclusion of a mutually beneficial trade agreement,” the Commerce and Industry Ministry said in a statement.

Positive discussions on various aspects of the trade agreement

The statement said that during the visit of officials of the US Trade Representative Office to India on September 16, positive discussions were held on various aspects of the trade agreement and it was decided to intensify efforts in this regard.

S Jaishankar has reached America for the UNGA session

S Jaishankar, who arrived in New York on Sunday for the high-level UNGA session, will hold a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings during the session and will also deliver the national statement at the General Debate from the prestigious UNGA platform on September 27. (Input-PTI)
