A student in New York, USA, arrived at school with a gun. The student posted about it on social media. After seeing the social media post, a person alerted the FBI, causing an uproar.
New York: A shocking incident has emerged from New York City, USA. A minor high school student has been arrested for bringing a pistol to class and threatening to carry out a “school shooting” on social media. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that the 16-year-old student posted the threat on Instagram while attending class at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Bayside, Queens.
Gun recovered from student’s backpack
Tish stated that a person who saw the post notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which then contacted the New York Police. Tisch stated that officers went to the school, located the student, and recovered a 9mm handgun loaded with 13 bullets in his backpack. She explained that unlike some other schools in New York City, Cardozo High School does not search students for weapons. The police commissioner stated that police did not publicly release the 16-year-old student’s name because he is a minor and has no prior criminal history.
What did the police do?
Tish said that police officers, along with school staff, first located the boy and then took him out of the classroom to an empty conference room. A search of the student’s bag revealed a pistol. He also said the boy had three mobile phones. Tisch said officers called a phone number associated with the 16-year-old’s Instagram post to confirm it was from him. The commissioner said that when officers called that number, one of the boy’s mobile phones rang.
Thousands of lives lost in America
Statistics show that more than 40,000 people die in shootings in the United States each year, including suicides. Approximately 20 million guns are sold annually. Gun control is debated in the United States. After every major incident, people demand stricter laws, but pressure from politics and the gun lobby prevents concrete action. Democrats generally favor stricter controls, while Republicans emphasize gun freedom. (AP)
