Washington: Now illegal immigrants will be taken into custody as soon as they reach the US border. President Donald Trump has signed his first law allowing pre-trial detention of illegal immigrants. This law gives the right to detain illegal immigrants accused of crimes like theft, burglary before the trial. This ‘Laken Riley Act’ had earlier received bipartisan support in both houses of the US Parliament ‘House and Senate’.
Trump signed it as his first bill after taking office on January 20. Trump said, “Under this law, the Department of Homeland Security will have the authority to detain all illegal immigrants who are arrested for crimes related to theft, burglary, robbery, assault on a police officer, murder or serious injury.” This law is named after Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student from Georgia who was killed by an illegal immigrant from Venezuela.
Trump called the law historic
Donald Trump called it a ‘historic law’. Meanwhile, Democratic Party MP Dick Durbin criticized the law, saying that it weakens the powers of the federal government and is against the immigration policies set by the Constitution. The bill was passed in the Senate by 64 votes against 35, while in the House it was approved by 263 votes against 156. After this, Trump signed this new immigration law. (Language)
