A shooting and arson attack at a Mormon church in Michigan, US, on Sunday left one person dead and nine others injured. Police said the attacker was shot and killed.

According to police, the shooting occurred at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, 50 miles north of Detroit. “There was an active shooter at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on McCandlish Road,” the Grand Blanc Township Police Department said in a statement on Facebook. “There are multiple victims and the shooter has been shot,” the statement added. “There is no threat to the public at this time. The church is on fire.”

The police department urged people to avoid the area, saying, “The reunion location for those on site is the pavilion located to the north. The off-site reunion will be at the Trillium Theatre on Holly and McCandlish.”

3 people killed in North Carolina shooting

The incident comes a day after a shooting in North Carolina, where a man on a boat opened fire at a restaurant, killing three people and injuring several others. According to officials, the death toll could rise as one person is hospitalized and fighting for his life. The incident occurred at the American Fish Company, a popular restaurant in the Southport Yacht Basin area. However, police have not released the names of those killed in the incident.

According to police, the shooting was a highly planned attack. Police said the attacker, identified as Nigel Edge of Oak Island, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon. “We’ve learned that this suspect is a veteran. He claims to be a combat veteran. He claims to be injured in the line of duty and suffers from PTSD,” Police Chief Todd Corning said at a press conference Sunday.
