UK Elections 2024: The Labor Party has won a spectacular victory in the UK general elections. Britain is going to get its first Labor government after 14 years of Conservative rule. Labor Party chief Keir Starmer will be the next PM of the UK.
After assuming the post of Prime Minister, Keir Starmer’s first month will be in the name of foreign tours. During this time he will hold several meetings with US President Joe Biden and other European leaders.
According to media reports, the Labour Party, which has been out of power since 2010, has promised a foreign policy of ‘progressive realism’. David Lammy, who is expected to become Foreign Secretary, said, ‘We are looking at an unstable world, it is not as we want it to be.’
Aim to build strong relations with India
According to media reports, another important aspect of Starmer’s foreign policy agenda will be to strengthen UK-India relations. Acknowledging historical mistakes, especially Labour’s stance on issues like Kashmir, Starmer has pledged to build a new strategic partnership with India. He wants to increase bilateral cooperation in free trade agreements (FTA) and technology, security, education and climate change.
The Labour manifesto included a commitment to pursue a ‘new strategic partnership’ with India, with a focus on a trade deal.
In an effort to improve strained relations with Indian immigrants in the UK, Starmer launched domestic outreach efforts during his campaign. He condemned Hinduphobia and celebrated cultural festivals such as Diwali and Holi. These gestures were intended to promote greater trust and inclusion within British-Indian communities.
Let us tell you that after voting on Thursday, the counting of votes is going on in Britain. The Labor Party has crossed the magical figure of 326 Westminster seats. The ruling Conservative Party has suffered a crushing defeat.
According to BBC, out of 650, Labour Party has won 405 seats so far while it has gained 205 seats. On the other hand, Conservative has won only 112 seats so far and it has lost 242 seats.
