US: condemns attack on Hindu temples in Bangladesh, demands thorough probe into cases

Washington, PTI. The US has condemned the recent violent attacks on Hindu temples and homes during Durga Puja celebrations in Bangladesh. Along with this, it has urged the authorities to investigate the cases thoroughly, saying that freedom of religion or belief is a human right.

Attacks on Hindu temples in Bangladesh have intensified since last Wednesday after rumors spread on social media during Durga Puja celebrations. A mob of hundreds damaged 66 houses and set fire to at least 20 houses of Hindus in Bangladesh late on Sunday.

State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Tuesday that we condemn the recent violent attacks on Hindu temples and businesses in Bangladesh during Durga Puja celebrations. Price said, “Our thoughts are with the Hindu community. We urge the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation. Freedom of religion or belief is a human right.

Local media in Bangladesh reported that six Hindus had been killed in separate attacks, but the figures could not be independently confirmed. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday directed Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan to take immediate action against those inciting violence using religion.

Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Rabab Fatima on Tuesday condemned the heinous attacks on the minority Hindu community in her country and said Dhaka will ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

At the same time, the CM of Tripura has called for the protection of minorities. According to IANS, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has appealed to the Bangladesh government to protect the life and property of the minorities. He said that the recent incidents are shameful.
