India was elected last year as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2021. India has to fulfill the responsibility of the post of President of a powerful 15-nation council next month. Each member country in turn presides over the council for one month.
United Nations. United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) President Volkan Bozkir praised the country for the “prosperous” work done during India’s presidency of the Security Council in August. These tasks will include high-level discussions on maritime security, peacekeeping and the threats posed by terrorism to international peace and security. Bojkir held a coordination meeting with India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti on Wednesday. Tirumurti will be the President of the Security Council for the month of August.
According to a statement issued from the office of the President of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Tirumurti briefed Bojkir about the main activities to be taken up during India’s presidency of the 15-nation Council. These activities will “focus on high-level discussions on maritime security, technology and peacekeeping, as well as threats to international peace and security from terrorist acts.”
they also discussed preparations for the high level week of the 76th session of the General Assembly. This session will be held in September. Bojkir thanked Tirumurti for meeting him and praised him for being personally present at most of the Security Council meetings and for the rich program of Security Council work for August.
