Baghdad At least three rocket attacks were carried out at the US Embassy in the Green Zone on Sunday evening in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. The government, in a statement, blamed a criminal group for the attack, saying the rockets were fired from the Al Rashid camp in the Shia-dominated eastern part of Baghdad. At present, no group has claimed responsibility for this attack. The rocket fell inside a residential complex causing damage to several buildings and cars there. However, there is no news of any civilian being hurt or any casualty. Last year too, the US embassy was attacked several times with rockets. Significantly, the Green Zone is the stronghold of major government offices and the Western Diplomatic Mission.

Iran-backed military organization responsible for rocket attacks

The Trump administration has been frustrated by the frequent rocket attacks and is blaming an Iranian-backed military organization for these attacks. In September 2020, the US warned that if the Iraqi government failed to take decisive action to stop these rocket attacks, it would close its embassy in Baghdad. When the US announced the withdrawal of its troops from Iraq in November 2020, the Shi’ite Allied Organization of Iran announced a ceasefire ceasefire so that the withdrawal of American troops could be easily completed.

Religious leaders also condemned the attack, with

Shia leader Muktada al-Sadr condemning the attack, and accused these terrorist organizations of endangering civilian lives. Al Sadr has called on the government to declare a state of emergency in Baghdad and protect civilians and diplomatic missions.

Rockets were destroyed in mid-air The rockets were destroyed in mid-air using

the C-RAM defense system of the US Embassy. Three Iraqi security officials told the Associated Press that it caused damage to property and parked cars, but no one was hurt or died.

Last month, four of the seven rockets from the Shiite-dominated east side of Baghdad hit the green zone. According to a government statement, one child was killed and five civilians were injured in this attack. The responsibility of this attack was taken by a military organization named Ashb al Kahf. Other organizations that spread panic have shied away from this incident and are trying to pass the responsibility of the incident on to other organizations.
