Washington: Scientists have developed a new technique for crisper-based corona tests. This technology is capable of producing accurate results in just under 30 minutes using a smart phone camera. According to research published in the journal ‘Cell’, not only positive and negative tests will be detected by the new technology but also virus load will be available in the sample.

According to the researchers, in all the crisper based tests currently available, viral RNA needs to be converted into DNA before testing. It not only takes much time but it is also very complex. In contrast, the new technique does not require any changes and it detects viral RNA using the crisper technique.

Jennifer Dudna, a senior researcher at the US-based Gladstone Institute, said that we are excited about the crisper-based test due to the fast and accurate results. With this technique, we can also test at places where rapid corona examination is required.

Let us tell you that Jennifer Doodna has received the Nobel Prize of the year 2020 along with two other scientists for developing the method of genome editing. In the new technique, CAS13 protein is combined with a reporter molecule and then mixed with a swab taken from the patient’s nose. The sample is now placed in a device that is attached to a smartphone.

If the sample contains viral RNA, CAS13 is activated and the reporter cuts off the molecule, leaving a bright light. According to the researchers, the smartphone camera that works like a microscope detects this bright light and tells that it is test positive. Dudna said that this technology can be easily accessible if it is adapted to different types of mobile phones.
