Netflix is testing out a feature that picks what you should watch next.
Several users on Twitter have reported seeing a “Shuffle Play” button on Netflix, and online photos show the option on the home screen below the user profile selections. The tool seems to work similarly to the shuffle button on other streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
When clicked, Netflix plays something you might like based on shows or movies you’ve never finished, Netflix said in a statement to USA TODAY. The company also throws in suggestions based on your taste in entertainment.
The company said it’s been testing the Shuffle Play feature since July, The Verge reports.
“We’re always looking for better ways to connect members with shows and films that they will love,” Netflix said. “We run these tests in different countries and for different periods of time – and only make them broadly available if people find them useful.”
The shuffle option could come in handy if you’re tired of trying to decide what to watch.
Some users seemed to welcome the new addition to the app. “Netflix’s new Shuffle feature is life,” @Bandit tweeted.
Others said they weren’t so impressed with the selection. “Why does my Netflix have a ‘shuffle play’ option? Who would ever use this and why?” @SiphokaziKayana tweeted.
People have been streaming more content on Netflix since the pandemic rocked the world.
Netflix reported in April that it saw a surge of new subscribers with many people stuck at home. In its second-quarter earnings report in July, the company said it added 10 million new subscribers, well above its projections of 7.5 million.
Netflix now boasts 193 million subscribers worldwide, but says it expects growth to slow throughout the rest of the year as states reopen and people get back to work.
