Pakistan: Setting minimum age of marriage for girls is not against Islam, top Islamic court ruled

The judgment said that education is a fundamental right for women’s empowerment. Education is the key to their development. On the basis of this, a new generation of any nation can be prepared. 

Pakistan’s top Islamic court has given a big decision in a case related to women’s rights. According to the judgment, fixing the minimum age for marriage of girls is not against the teachings of Islam. The court gave this decision while dismissing the petition challenging certain sections of the Child Marriage Restraint Act.

The court’s decision has raised hopes for women’s rights and has come as a blow to fundamentalist Muslims who say that there is no age for marriage in Islam. The verdict was delivered by a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of the Federal Shariat Court, Mehmed Noor Meskanzai.

According to Dawn newspaper, the bench dismissed the petition challenging the ban on child marriage. Along with this, he said that setting the minimum age for marriage of girls in Islamic State is not against Islam.

Not Un-Islamic The Law 

Court in its 10-page judgment held that the law prohibiting child marriage is not un-Islamic. Fixing the minimum age of girls and boys for marriage is not against Islamic teachings. The court in its judgment has said that there is a need for universality of education and awareness. Education is equally necessary for all, irrespective of gender.
