Khartoum, Reuters. Sudan’s Supreme General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has defended the military coup, saying he had to overthrow Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok’s government to save the country from civil war.

Meanwhile, protests continue in the streets of Sudan’s capital on the second day of the coup. General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said in his first press conference on Tuesday that Hamdok was under house arrest and was not harmed.

He said that the army was compelled to take the reins of power in its own hands as the stance of the politicians had turned completely against the army. Meanwhile, a health ministry official said seven people had died in violent clashes following Monday’s coup.

Life has come to a standstill in Khartoum and Omdurman, the cities situated on the banks of the Nile. Shops have been closed and the smoke of tires burnt by the protesters was seen on the streets.

The military has carried out a coup in Sudan. On Monday night, the army snatched power from the government and declared rule over the country. After this the citizens of the country came out on the road and started protesting. In these demonstrations 7 people died, while 140 people were injured.

The leader of the coup, General Abdal Fattah al-Burhan, also dissolved the military-civilian ruling committee. The council was formed two years ago to enforce democracy in the country after dictator Omar al-Bashir was ousted from power.

Power will be handed over to the government elected in the 2023 elections

Burhan has imposed emergency in the country. He has said that the army has to protect the country. He promised that elections would be held in July 2023 and then power would be handed over to the elected government.
