US: Chinese citizen arrested, smuggled rare turtles worth Rs 16.6 crore

Washington. A Chinese citizen smuggling Rare Species of Turtle has been extradited to the US from Malaysia. Kang Juntao was accused of money laundering last February. Kang was arrested at Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur International Airport before being extradited to the US on Thursday. This person named Kang Juntao is from Hangzhou of East China.

Kang is accused of funding the smugglers

Kang is also accused of funding those between June 2017 and December 2018 and arranging to illegally send them to Hong Kong after allegedly buying turtles belonging to five protected species from the US. These turtles were kept in a very inhuman manner. These turtles were tied with tape and put in socks so that custom officials could not get their information.

The
US Justice Department has accused Kang of smuggling 1,500 turtles, in a statement that according to the allegations against Kang – 1,500 turtles worth $ 2,250,000 (amounting to more than 166 million) were smuggled out of the US. Kang allegedly bought these turtles on social media or Reptile trade websites using advertisements from sellers, using a PayPal account.

Turtles are sold in the black market for thousands of dollars

According to the Department of Justice, these vendors used to immediately send these turtles to middlemen who were usually Chinese citizens on student visas. Kang instructed these people to change the packaging of these turtles after payment and then used false labels for shipment to Hong Kong. Once these turtles reached Hong Kong, they were sold for thousands of dollars in the black market. Kang never told the American or Chinese Customs Department about the turtles, nor made any effort to obtain the necessary permits from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wildlife and Flora (CITES).

officials have accused Kang that the Eastern box turtle, the Florida box turtle, the Florida box turtle, the Gulf Coast The Gulf Coast box turtle, the spotted turtle and the wood turtle were all smuggled. These are all protected species.
