Miley Cyrus is coming in like a wrecking ball again as a late addition to the performers for the 2020 MTV VMAs.
Cyrus, whose video for “Mother’s Daughter” is up for best art direction and best editing awards, will perform her new single, “Midnight Sky,” during the show on Aug. 30, it was announced Monday.
MTV’s Video Music Awards ceremony, hosted by Keke Palmer, will also include performances by Lady Gaga, The Weeknd, BTS, Doja Cat, J Balvin, Maluma and Roddy Ricch.
At 2019’s VMAs, the now-27-year-old Cyrus sang her breakup ballad “Slide Away,” just days after splitting from longtime squeeze Liam Hemsworth, 30, whom Cyrus recently said was the first “dude” she went “all the way with” when she was 16.
Cyrus, who hosted the show in 2015, is often remembered for her shocking, twerk-filled routine with Robin Thicke at the 2013 VMAs.
The VMAs, originally set to take place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, will instead be more coronavirus-conscious and socially distant with outdoor performances across New York City.
“The VMAs will highlight the boroughs in an exciting show and return to Barclays Center in 2021,” representatives for MTV and Barclays Center said in a recent statement. “MTV will continue to work closely with the Department of Health, state and local officials, the medical community and key stakeholders to ensure the safety of all involved.”
The top nominees this year include Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga, with nine each, followed closely by Billie Eilish and The Weeknd, with six nominations each.
