  • China itself blamed for deteriorating relations with America – Experts’ opinion

  • ‘Until China improves attitude, Biden should also stay away from Jinping’

  • ‘Biden should try to improve relations with allied countries rather than China’

Detailed

There are speculations around the world about the attitude of the elected President of America, Joe Biden’s administration towards China. Experts of US-China relations have tried to speculate on whether they will take a very tough stand against China like the Donald Trump administration, or try to resolve differences through diplomacy. In a conference here on Tuesday, many experts expressed their opinion on these issues.

This virtual conference was organized by the prestigious newspaper South China Morning Post. A major opinion emerged that Joe Biden should not personally meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping until China improves its conduct. Biden, instead, should focus on improving relations with America’s allies, which have weakened during Trump’s tenure.
Director of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Bonnie Glaeser, said that China is assuming that the US is weakening. He is in his decay. Therefore, Joe Biden should not meet Xi in the early days of his tenure, as this would further confirm China’s opinion. Instead, before meeting Xi, Biden should focus on solving his country’s problems, reviving America’s relations with its allies, and restoring American prestige in the world.
Joe Biden will take over as President of the US on January 20. There has been a possibility that despite the anti-China sentiment in the country, they would prefer to start talks with China at the earliest. Biden has appointed Anthony Blinken as his foreign minister and Jake Sullivan as national security adviser. Both are said to be supporters of starting talks with China. However, his recent comments have also conveyed the message that he now considers China a far greater threat to American interests than four years ago.

Daniel Rusell, who worked as an advisor on East Asia affairs in the Barack Obama administration, said at the conference that in recent years both the US and China have tightened their stance towards each other. But he said that due to China’s behavior, there has been an atmosphere of mistrust in America. Therefore, China should listen to other countries and parties. It should not be surrounded in the Eco Chamber of the Communist Party (in an environment where only favorite things are done).

David Shambau, director of China Policy Program at George Washington University, said that the only country that can make China an international destination is China itself. He said that China is spreading its arms and legs around the world. Because of this, he is inviting criticism and resistance for himself.

Experts said that despite increasing US-China tensions, it is still difficult to imagine that the two countries will stop talking to each other. Glaeser suggested the US should offer working-level negotiations. Perhaps this can be done in the case of trade. Roussel said that it is difficult to think of ways to open the dialogue between the two countries. He said that it would be dangerous, because it would mean increasing problems and worsening of conditions.

Cheng Li, director of the Washington-based Brookings Institution, said his immediate summit with Xi would not be a mature move after Biden became president. He said that nothing more will be achieved because the political environment in America is against China.
