Important bill passed in US Senate, Indians who have been waiting for green card for years will get big relief

Washington: The US Senate has unanimously passed a bill that ends the determination of the maximum number of Employment-Based Immigrant Visa for various countries. Also makes him a family based visa. This bill will benefit hundreds of Indian professionals working in America who have been waiting for a green card for years. The Senate’s approval of the Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act on Wednesday is a big relief for Indian IT professionals who came to the US on H-1B visas and have been waiting for decades for a green card or permanent accommodation.

The bill was approved by the House of Representatives on 10 July 2019. The bill raised the limit on family-based immigration visas to seven per cent of the country’s total visas existing that year to 15 per cent. The bill was introduced by Senator Like Lee of the Republican Party from the state of Ota. Indian citizens received 9,008 Category 1 (EB1), 2908 Category 2 (EB2), and 5,083 Category 3 (EB3) green cards in FY 2019. (EB3) There are various categories of employment-based green cards.

Senator Lee told the Senate in July that the backlog of an Indian citizen to get permanent residence or green card is more than 195 years. Senator Kevin Kramer stated that the ‘Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act’ creates a more merit-based system that provides equal opportunities to skilled immigrants. Cramer worked to ensure that the bill would prevent fraud and misuse of the visa system
